IKEBANA IN MAINE: 3/11 Rest in Peace for victims of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

They are my humble dedications for all people who were affected by the Tohoku earthquake.

What does Ikebana mean?

Ikebana means 'giving life to flowers.' Its original purpose is offering flowers to Buddha. Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, emphasizes harmony with heaven, earth and man creating the unity of the three principles. Dynamic lines, created with a few materials and the space between flowers, are distinctive characteristics of Ikebana. The use of negative space creates serene natural aesthetics that opens up a space for contemplation of life. The emptiness of the arrangement is more meaningful than a full vase of flowers. It invites us to think about the natural cycle of life and the relationship between nature and people. Each Ikebana arrangement gives us an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of nature and simplicity. Ikebana flower arranging can be considered as a miniature representation of the universe in a small container.

2008 November: Held an Ikebana workshop at McLaughlin Garden, South Paris, Maine.

Ikebana one-person show in March and April at Glickman Family Library, University of Southern Maine, Portland Campus.

2008 March: Taught Ikebana at Center for Continuing Education University of Southern Maine.

1998 earned a certificate of Ikebana instructor from a Japanese Ikebana school.
